Digital video has several advantages over analogue, the first and most relevant is the fact that the quality never varies, unlike a video tape that deteriorates with continued use.
It is recommended by manufacturers that the tapes be degaussed after use, unless
they need to be stored, and that a stock of at least thirty tapes are kept for
rotation purposes.
The cost of replacing the tapes daily as recommended by the manufacturers,
is actually more expensive than some maintenance and service contracts for
a digital system.
Using our system, video is compressed using the latest Mpeg 4 ©® technology, which means that two months continual surveillance may be stored in less than 20 gigabytes.
Hard drive prices are reducing and the capacity increasing continually, which means that videos of immeasurable
length may be kept for ever, with no deterioration in quality.
With the increased use of CD and DVD writers, not to mention the now very
affordable price, allow the video to be stored conveniently, cheaply, efficiently and
may be viewed on a television via a regular DVD player.
Video may be streamed over the Internet or modem connection, using password
protection only those authorised to view the stream will gain access. With quality
available comparable to, and equally as good as a television picture.
It can record the video from remote locations, so there may be two or more
video records.
If movement is detected during "out of hours" times, an alert
may be sent to a pager, cell phone, email or all three.
So really there is no contest.
